When your website starts ranking, you may acquire a few spam links, which can affect your sites “spam score.” Depending on your industry, spam links can get out of hand.
For example, when my own Forex affiliate site content starting appearing in Google search results for page one, it’s spam score went up to 48% and I had some well dodgy backlinks.
The First Step
Check the backlinks to your website. Go to Neil Patel’s free backlink checker because it’s a great resource that gives an in-depth breakdown of your site’s backlinks.
On that page, check the domain authority (DA) and spam score for each link. Ideally, get rid of any backlink with a spam score over 2%.
Quick Tip: A spam URL may also have a low DA score
A website spam score of under 31 is (apparently) low, but even so, if you’re a bit OCD like me, I hate having a higher number than 1%.
Assuming your website is verified with Google Console (if not, why not? You need analytics to assess progress), go to the Google Disavow page to disavow the link:
Click on the “property” that is your website address
By the way, if you have your website as a “Domain Property“, Google doesn’t enable link disavowing. You need to have your domain as a URL prefix. (A Domain Property includes all subdomains of your website)
The Next Step
You need to create a *.txt file, so open notepad.
If you have two or more links to disavow, here is the EXACT format for the *.txt file: –
# Two pages to disavow
If you only have one domain to disavow, here is the EXACT format for the *.txt file: –
# One domain to disavow
In the second example, if you add the prefix http:// or https:// it won’t work, the uploader returns an error in the layout, so you must use the exact format, including spacing as shown above.
Disavowing a spam link is a quick and easy process. However, don’t hold your breath for the link to be removed. It can take up to three months to disavow spam links. I have no idea why it takes so long for Google to remove it, but that’s how it is.
I hope you find this informational helpful. I used to think it was complicated to disavow spam links but, as you can see, it is quick and easy to submit your list.
